This latest restoration arrived by post in need of some TLC, the remit was to re-paint the hull replace the entire deck area plus repair or replace the masts etc and fit new sails and rigging. The first task was to remove the old masts etc and rigging making careful notes as things progressed so as not to get confused at a later stage in the restoration. Once the sails and rigging had been removed the serious work on the deck could start this involved very carefully removing the old damaged deck to use as a template for the new one piece deck, however before this could take place I fitted new support beams throughout the ship to support the new deck.
Due to the fact the tiller arm had to stay in place the deck had to be cut up to the point at which the tiller arm passed through this would allow the new deck to slide into place and the cut was then filled and sanded etc to completely hide the joint. With the new deck in place I could now prep the hull for the re-paint this required quite a lot of prep work inc filling and sanding before 2/3 coats of primer were applied rubbing down between each coat to achieve the perfect finish. Now that the basic prep work had been finished the water line was very carefully marked on and the final colours could be applied using at least 3 coats for each of the colours to be applied again rubbing down between each layer to achieve the perfect end result. The final task before polishing was to apply the water line and the name details (bespoke order from Becc) thus completing the hull re-paint.
With the hull now complete the work on the masts could be carried out this was straight forward enough to do followed by carefully marking out the size and shape of the new sails to be fitted. Once the sails had been completed the specific lettering detail could be added at the request of the customer as well as the final sail fixings before the sails were re-fitted and re-rigged. With the sails and rigging now finished the final job was to check over the entire model to make sure everything is just perfect.
Overall this proved to be a very enjoyable restoration hopefully to be enjoyed for years to come.
