A short while ago I received a model of the Cutty Sark to restore overall the ship itself was in pretty good shape but as with every restoration you can come across those things that you did not expect.
The remit for this restoration was to maintain its aged look and to put right any damage as well as sorting out the rigging. Once I had worked out exactly the work required I removed the entire damaged rigging etc and started the task of replacing it with new rigging threads to match the colour of the old ones in order to maintain the aged effect this as you can imagine took some time to achieve. Most of the rigging ended up being replaced including the back stays, some forward stays as well as Yard braces and some of the shrouds and ratlines using the original style of fixing method again to maintain the desired effect. Once the rigging was replaced and re-attached to the Bitts the next job was to replace some fittings and re-attach some of the original fittings eg hatch comings and anchors etc as well as the capstan and sorting out some of the hand rails.
With most of the restoration now complete the next task was to give the entire ship a deep clean to bring her back to her former glory this in itself took some considerable time to complete due to the intricacy of the ships layout but proved well worth it. Now that the restoration is completed the final job was to very carefully check her all over to make sure that the work required had been completed successfully.
In summing up this proved to be a most enjoyable restoration and is now back in the hands of its owner to be enjoyed for years to come.
